Predictions for 2009?!

January 6, 2009 - 10:28am
Another on the QT demo in Brooklyn Centre. Right off Denison (again!)

Predictions for 2009? So convenient that our treasurer and former council representative will now oversee a massive CDC aka Community Reinvestment Development Corporation aka the County Land Bank...aka the SHELL game.

Does this look familiar? Am I the only one who remembers Gus Frangos?

Whatever Happened to . . . Rehabs and restorations in Glenville? Go see Superman's birthplace

January 2, 2009 - 11:31am

From the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER:

What happened to the effort to restore Jerry Siegel's home in Glenville, where he and friend Joe Shuster created Superman in 1933?

The unassuming house on Kimberly Avenue is being rebuilt with more than $100,000 donated by comic book fans.

A total of $111,047 was raised in the fall in an Internet auction of original art put together by Cleveland's Siegel and Shuster Society and author Brad Meltzer, whose novel "The Book of Lies" uses the house as a setting. After eBay fees, about $100,000 was available to restore the home, which had fallen into disrepair.

Supporters bought original art of Superman created by comic book artists Curt Swan, Travis Charest, Frank Cho and others. There were bidding wars for unique items, such as a walk-on role on the television show "Heroes," the opportunity to appear on the cover of a comic written by former Clevelander Brian Bendis, or a Superman T-shirt signed by the late Siegel.

Since the auction ended, workers have torn down the house's two chimneys. One was rebuilt and the second one was removed.

Workers also repaired the leaking roof, which was paramount to stopping further damage, said Tracey Kirksey, executive director of the Glenville Development Corp. and a board member of the Siegel and Shuster Society.

Kirksey said the repairs are being arranged around the schedules of the house's owners, Hattie and Jefferson Gray, so as not to completely disrupt their lives.

All windows will be replaced. New siding has also been ordered and will be installed as soon as weather permits.

Kirksey said workers will repair all the damaged plaster walls, which will be an extensive job.

"We're going to plan it so the windows and the siding can be done on one side of the house at a time, allowing the Grays a little space," she said.

An official unveiling will be held in the spring, with some surprises the Siegel and Shuster Society is still working out.

Another society member, Jamie Reigle, salvaged 100 of the home's chimney bricks and is selling them for $100 each at his Web site, www.supercollectibles.com.

Each brick has a plaque of authenticity attached. All profits from the sales will be split between the Siegel and Shuster Society and the Glenville Development Corp.

Subject: FW: Housing Specialist Announcement

Dear BCCA Members,

The Brooklyn Centre Community Association (BCCA) is proud to announce the hiring of our new Ward 15 Housing Specialist, Debra Zeleny. Ms. Zeleny brings with her over 18 years of professional experience as well extensive knowledge and expertise in code enforcement and field research. Many residents of Old Brooklyn and Brooklyn Centre may be familiar with Debra due to her attendance at community meetings, participation in neighborhood functions, or from her previous work as a housing code enforcer at the Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation. She has been publicly recognized by Cleveland City Council and others for community leadership, dedication and outstanding service. Ms. Zeleny was selected out of a pool of 16 candidates whose applications came in from a three-state area. We warmly welcome her to our team and encourage everyone to extend congratulations to Ms. Zeleny when possible.

About Greater Brooklyn H.O.P.E.

Whether our dialogue is around foreclosure prevention or historic preservation, the livelihood of our communities is greatly dependent upon our homes, both inside and out. As part of a means to find community-based solutions to housing-related issues, Councilman Brian Cummins has initiated the Greater Brooklyn Housing Opportunity and Preservation Enterprise (H.O.P..E.). As a joint effort between the BCCA, the Southwest Citizens' Area Council and others, the HOPE project will identify and assist with processes of enforcement of City of Cleveland building and housing codes; home acquisition, rehabilitation and re-use of vacant housing units; and strengthening the awareness and access to programs for historic rehabilitation and preservation of properties.

Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday season!

Sincerely,

Darren

local beef from the FreshForkers

December 30, 2008 - 5:19pm

Here's an email forwarded from Kyle, and my comment appended thereto:

If any of you were wondering "where's the beef???" this holiday season, the boys over at FreshForkMarket got your beef, right there. I know nothing about price, but one of the freshforkers is a neighbor, in Mike Tur's place, and can tell you all about it.

Please share--these boys are truly advocates of local production for local consumption.

We became aware of them through DanTMoore's VC series in the Tyler Elevator Complex on Superior.

Rokakis land bank bill passes

December 23, 2008 - 8:23am

from Kevin Leeson:

The Ohio House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the county land bank legislation on its final day of business last week, and the Ohio Senate concurred with the House version of the bill. The legislation was revised to so that it applies only to Cuyahoga County. Governor Strickland is expected to sign the bill, and Cuyahoga County officials hope to begin operating the land bank early next year.

Rosemary Vinci found dead; had ties to Jimmy Dimora and Frank Russo

December 23, 2008 - 4:38am

We' d been to a political fundraiser at her home as recently as a few years ago, when she was still in the acceptable mainstream of social-event-throwers; Rosemary had good ties throughout the government networks around here and afforded all of us first-hand access to the Duck Island experience.

Until recently, she had been the head of the Ward 13 Democratic Club, home turf of City Councilman Joe Cimperman. And in 2005, she managed Joe Santiago's successful council campaign.

She also chaired the Duck Island Block Club and had served as president of the board at Tremont West Development Corp. Vinci did great work for the group and will be missed, said Chris Garland, Tremont West's executive director.

Things are changing fast.
