While on his honeymoon in Trouville, Monet painted the most glamous hotel, the newly built Hotel des Roches Noires. An abstract American flag is flying in the upper left because in addition to many Parisians, American tourists flocked to this hotel. This was not where the Monets stayed though. They vacationed at the Hotel Tivoli on the rue des Bains - a less fashionable and less expensive location. In October the Monets left Trouville -skipping out on their hotel bill -- and fled to London to escape the Franco-Prussian War.
