Case Western Law School had a benefit concert to support some of the events and interests of their program at Playhouse Square September 5th, 2008 and what a remarkable performance! It was an intimate evening with a legendary folk singer who is an amazing storyteller as well as an inspiration when it comes to peace and social justice. ( categories: )
Art of the Day: City Xpressions08Submitted by Norm Roulet on August 25, 2008 - 10:56am.
Huge props to the many artists, MCs, DJs, bboys-and-girls, organizers and 100s of real NEOans who turned out for the 7th annual City Xpressions Street Art Festival, August 23, 2008, at West 25th and Lorain, Cleveland. A perfect summer day - great happy crowd - creative vibe and entertainment - and some spectacular urban art. While there weren't as many artists as the last year I attended, what showed was diverse and often pure genius.

Congratulations to Shaw's 'Best Band In The World'Submitted by Norm Roulet on July 4, 2008 - 10:06am.
When people wonder what is the value of a local daily newspaper, I must point to the story of Shaw High School Band, which was invited to China to perform but could not afford to do that. The Plain Dealer article "Bang a Drum, Proudly", by Connie Schulz, raised enough attention and funding to get them there, from where they just returned in triumph (nicely covered in the PD here, today)... a $500,000 whirlwind phenomenon all occurring in less than 6 months!

An Afternoon of BassoonSubmitted by CPL Fine Arts on May 21, 2008 - 11:59am.
On Saturday, May 24th, 2008, the Fine Arts Department will present a recital of classical music written for bassoon and piano. The bassoon is most familiar by its role as the grandfather in Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" and the opening solo in Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring." The performers include Fine Arts librarian, Michael Dalby and friend, PJ Woolston, who performed together in various orchestras in college. Anne Dalby will accompany them on the piano. The recital will feature works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Lars-Erik Larsson, and Johann Baptist Vanhal. Please join us on the 3rd floor of Main Library on Saturday, May 24th, 2008 at 4pm for "An Afternoon of Bassoon"!

Euclid Tavern Reopening!!!Submitted by lmcshane on January 25, 2008 - 12:33am.
2008/01/25 - 9:00am Etc/GMT-4 LocationI can't believe that I found out about this--today from a bad flyer in Parma.
and the PD is just picking it up now, too...I saw the place a couple of months ago. This is a sacred place for a lot of people and the new owner respects the history of the Euclid Tavern. Believe it or not, the sign is a reconstruction. See www.euclid-tavern.com as this develops.

Bill Callahan and I are pleased to offer a last moment opportunity to join an important conversation just beginning on making NEO a global leader in the use of Free Open Source Software, with the man who wrote the Open Source Definition, Bruce Perens. Bruce is Vice President of Developer Relations and Policy for FOSS-related SourceLabs, of Seattle. NEO is fortunate to have a local connection with Bruce, as the Director of Marketing for SourceLabs, Athena Diamantis, lives in this region. Digital Vision Director Bill Callahan and East Cleveland CIO Abu Alli met with Bruce and Athena last week to discuss how to make NEO a world FOSS leader, and we decided that is a topic deserving much broader and more open attention. So tomorrow we continue growing the dialog. |
Join us, if you may... 8 AM breakfast tomorrow at the Juniper Grill.
It is always exciting to see powerful uses of the technology we use for realneo - Drupal. Derek recently pointed out that the New York Observer uses Drupal for their web presence and I just found a posting on the website of the originator and keeper of the Drupal flame, Dries Buytaert, that Ozzy uses Drupal - his label Sony uses Drupal. I'd heard that about Sony, but hadn't connected it with any of their sites before... this...

Friday night I attended a reception and lecture at SPACES Gallery for select Cleveland organizations with interest in urban planning and sustainability. The current exhibition at Spaces, Shrinking Cities, explores strategies for post-industrial urban areas and should be of great interest to anyone interested in urban planning and sustainability. Terry Schwarz, Senior Planner at the Urban Design Center of Northeast Ohio, was to give a tour of the exhibition. My affiliation? I am an energy ambassador at Case. I am also an art historian, and although there are some witty, beautiful and innovative works represented in the exhibition the theme and the messages of the show truly over power the aesthetics. One could easily forget they are in an art exhibition.
Wednesday night's lecture at the Cleveland Clinic with Peter B. Lewis and Frank Gehry was everything I had expected and more. I doubt an audience member left without a new appreciation for the positive, transformative power of architecture, friendship and collaboration. It was inspiring just to be in the same room with two people who had made such great contributions to architecture. It was also inspiring to see two people, two friends, who worked so well together as client and architect. A testament to Gehry's fame, the lecture had very few visuals – only a few slides of his most famous buildings such as the Disney Concert Hall in LA, The Experience Museum Project in Seattle, the Guggenheim Bilboa and the unbuilt Peter B. Lewis residence were shown. Peter Lewis and Frank Gehry each spent 15 minutes discussing some of the highlights of their lives and careers and then they took questions from the audience.
