Neo KnowsReal NEO art never left!Submitted by Norm Roulet on July 2, 2008 - 2:03pm.
I love art, and much in the Cleveland Museum's collection, and the old and newish CMA, but I am not convinced the current reengineering of the museum is economically positive for the region, and I am very displeased with their new slogan "art is back" as shallow and disrespectful to the real NEO arts community, which has never left. The museum needs to better explore its identity and role here, as so many arts organizations, our population and economy transition, and the CMA takes a proportionately larger share of the arts funding pie. If CMA is spending $100s millions constructing new edifices for old mold and cobwebs, I will be very disappointed. I'm waiting to see Rub put his shine on anything, other than proclaiming art is back in a place it never left. What do you think... did art leave? Who, Why, Where, When and What the HEK?Submitted by Norm Roulet on May 28, 2008 - 11:59am.
One fascinating thing about REALNEO is the interconnection it enables - in July 2007 I posted an article about some tagging in my new neighborhood of the time, at W. 45th and Detroit, by HEK. Since then, HEK tags have spread to every corner of the community, and I've never seen an explanation Who, Why, Where, When and What the HEK? Well, today I received an email from a stranger who found my posting through a Google search and has some very personal concerns about HEK, beyond vandalism. Artist for Eternity: Rest in Peace, Scott MillerSubmitted by Norm Roulet on May 20, 2008 - 1:22pm.
I was saddened to learn today that the excellent Northeast Ohio painter - a Cleveland Institute of Art graduate and productive artist - Scott Miller passed away, this weekend. I'm sure detals will follow here and in other arts media. My mother taught Scott at CIA and remembers him as a great talent, who lived life his own way. Scott just had a powerful show of recent work at Gray's Auctioneers Gallery, in December 2007, at which I shot these photos of Scott and his work - I'll post more later. Question of the Day... What Drives Your Hyper-Local Economy?Submitted by Norm Roulet on May 7, 2008 - 8:00am.
Little Italy has always been core to my REAL NEO experience. From earliest childhood memories, my family has always had many meals at various Little Italy restaurants, each year, as well as picking-up an occasional pizza (where else in NEO but Mama Santas or Valentino's... well, do try the Gelatoria at Fairhill). I also love getting Lemon Ice and other goodies at Corbos. with their unusual greeting of "Leave the gun, take the cannoli"... as authentic as life gets, in NEO. Last night, I noticed Corbos moved next door to their old home, to a remodeled new space (much as Prestis did, a few years ago) Little Italy has always been a great hyper-local neighborhood, where people live, work, eat and socialize together within, and interact well with the world without. There's always lots of private rehab and strong entrepreneurial business activity here, off the Med-O-Mart grid. Which makes me ask you, what matters to the hyper-local economy in your neighborhood, and how is that doing. Question of the day: What is your favorite cookbook?Submitted by Norm Roulet on April 30, 2008 - 12:19am.
All species, all races, everywhere, we all must eat, frequently, so we humans may as well eat well. I prefer to eat at home, food I prepare, of ingredients I know, in a kitchen I trust... there are few restaurants in the world that make me happier than homemade. But I certainly turn to experts for advice on food selection and preparation, and many of my favorite books - the ones I read over and over, and can't do without - are cookbooks. I find all types interesting... international, ethnic, historical, regional... and consider many required reading. I'd be interesting for other foodie realneo members who share an interest in cooking to share their favorite cookbooks... some of mine are the header for today... Keeping up with the Joneses, rather than Tubbs-JonesSubmitted by Norm Roulet on March 4, 2008 - 3:41am.
When I asked one of the Obama volunteers at my ward campaign headquarters how she thought Obama would do in our poor, urban, distressed part of town, she said she was the first African American to move to East Cleveland, and she knows everyone there, and they will all vote for Obama... and then I realized it was Mrs. Jones. 2007 Cleveland Institute of Art Faculty ShowSubmitted by Norm Roulet on December 10, 2007 - 2:04pm.
The Cleveland Institute of Art is extraordinarily important to Northeast Ohio and the world for the great artists and designers educated there, and for the great artists and designers who are the educators, and staff. Each year, the work of the diverse CIA faculty is showcased in an exhibition not to be missed... the reception for 2007 was last Friday, December 7, and a great event, as always... perhaps the last ever in the historic Gund Building Reinberger Gallery space, as the CIA moves in total to Euclid Avenue. Renowned architect Carl Stein explains "rampant environmental recklessness" of plans for BreuerSubmitted by Norm Roulet on December 3, 2007 - 9:31am.
November 28, 2007, renowned architect Carl Stein, FAIA, Principal of elemental architecture, llc, of New York City, shared his valuable understanding about the environment in Northeast Ohio and the world, focusing on the energy of buildings and a specific analysis of the Breuer Cleveland Trust Tower, in downtown Cleveland. This is the only high-rise by revolutionary architect Marcel Breuer, and it is globally appreciated as a masterpiece of modern design and construction... yet it is planned for demolition by Cuyahoga County Commissioners Dimora and Hagan. Stein worked with Breuer for many years, including when Breuer built the Cleveland Trust Tower, and Stein's conclusion is there is no rational excuse for demolishing the Breuer. As Stein states, "just that Breuer and this building are so important is enough reason to preserve the Breuer"... although Stein gives many other reasons! An important addition was made to The John and Mildred Putnam Sculpture Collection, located on the campus of Case Western Reserve University and the grounds of University Circle, with the installation of a fantastic steel sculpture by masterful sculptor and Cleveland Institute of Art President David Deming, which is titled "Inner Circle". Located by the Case residential village, across from the Starbucks, at the intersection of East 115th, Juniper and Bellflower, this work is a great addition to an important art collection, curated by Evelyn Kiefer, that makes University Circle a much more inspiring and remarkable place, with public art. 07.05.18 Header of the Day: "Merging" by Athena TachaSubmitted by Norm Roulet on May 18, 2007 - 6:59pm.
One of my favorite works of public art in NEO is "Merging", by Athena Tacha, which is a large scale stone and water installation on the campus of Case University, nicely positioned near the Gehry designed Peter B. Lewis Building. The sculpture is part of the Putnam Sculpture Collection, and additional information and other images of this work are found here. This panorama was taken on a beautiful, brisk, sunny spring day, May 18, 2007, from the top of the sculpture. Music of the Day: George FoleySubmitted by Norm Roulet on April 17, 2007 - 1:35am.
Claes and I were picking up Evelyn at the University Circle Arabica Sunday around 5 and I heard one of my favorite sounds flowing over from my favorite area spot - the Barking Spider - roots jazz. I knew who I would find there... the finest roots jazz musician I know in town, George Foley... so we headed right over. George plays and sings, solo and with many area musicians, in every imaginable combo, all over town, and it is always a fun, uplifting and inspiring experience. How worthless may a website be? See Cleveland.Com for ultimate lowSubmitted by Norm Roulet on April 16, 2007 - 9:18am.
I didn't get my copy of the Plain Dealer, this morning... probably stolen off my porch. So, I thought, I don't like paying for a dirty old paper anyways, and only read some of the content, so why not just read it on-line at their union-busting Cleveland-dot-com website. Unfortunately, that is not a realistic option... every time I load the home page or any main section on the site, a viral pop-up advertisement for some Health Club attacks my computer. 7 comments | read more | 1557 reads

NEO Knows Johnny Mango brings World-Cafe-cool to Ohio CitySubmitted by Norm Roulet on March 28, 2007 - 9:13pm.
Johnny Mango World Cafe and Bar is a love at first and each sight, bite and margarita restaurant for me - creatively well decorated, eclectic environment, friendly staff, and always a great crowd... whether just a few tables of regulars or packed with anyone or everyone in town (generally on weekends... especially when the weather is great and sidewalk patio is open). The reason is a fresh juice bar, meaning some of the best drinks and smoothies possible, along with a great selection of Tequila... along with Momocho (which is next door), they have the best margaritas in town... along with a "world-cafe" menu of fun, unusual foods, cooked fresh, with fresh ingredients, in the open kitchen... and location, location, location in beautiful, vibrant Ohio City. REALNEO to be featured on WVIZ Applause, premiering this Thursday, March 29, 2007Submitted by Norm Roulet on March 25, 2007 - 1:33pm.
I was quite honored to be contacted, a few weeks ago, by the producer of one of my favorite television programs, Dee Perry's "Applause", asking for information about REALNEO. Seems he was doing research on the spectacular Convivium 33 Gallery, which we have featured extensively on REALNEO, covering Christopher Pekoc here and Clarence Van Duzer here (photos from which were featured in Cleveland Magazine), so REALNEO came up in search results. The producer saw REALNEO as in interesting source of insight on arts and culture in NEO and suggested to his staff doing a segment on Applause about REALNEO. Even though we scheduled the interview, this seemed very abstract until I just saw a promotion on WVIZ for the show, featuring a scrolling view of the REALNEO home page. 2 comments | read more | 1898 reads

"Citizen Hauser" After-Party a Great Celebration of the Value of Film Industry in NEOSubmitted by Norm Roulet on March 19, 2007 - 12:16pm.
Being a great fan of "Citizen Hauser" - the man (center, above) and the movie - and Whiskey Island, and film producers Ryan Rodriguez (left) and Jonathan Shick (right), founders of Blue Hole Productions, it was an especially great pleasure to celebrate the movie, creators, park and star at a Cleveland International Film Festival after-party to end all after-parties, at the Sunset Cafe, aka Bourbon Street Grill, at the Marina at Wendy Park, on Whiskey Island. Those who know NEO know "ITS A NEW DAY IN EAST CLEVELAND"Submitted by Norm Roulet on March 7, 2007 - 2:09am.
As a core group of innovative urban planners and developers move forward creating a new way in East Cleveland, it is exciting to look back along the main street that brought us to today, and that will take so many deserving citizens past those with little insight who have driven so much of this region into poverty. Looking back, and forward, here is a powerful set of perspectives from CIA graduate and Kent Urban Design graduate student Joe Stanley, of NEO Main Street, from two years ago, under a former administration. Now, under Mayor Brewer and his staff, redevelopment of this community is underway - thanks for your vision and keeping the faith, Joe! Art of the Day: Derek Hess 2Submitted by Norm Roulet on February 27, 2007 - 6:54pm.
One of my favorite NEO-raised and based artists is Derek Hess, who is featured on Art of the Day here, and whose last exhibit - with Bask, the last ever for 1300 Gallery, with which Hess was affiliated - was really outstanding... write-up here. At Derek's previous exhibition at 1300, I was really struck by the drawing above and below. While only 6" or so wide and tall, both the image and the execution are so powerful, and demonstrate Derek's exceptional technique, design and line. This original work was only $150 - about the only original work by Derek I could ever afford - and one of my favorites in my home. I thought others would enjoy seeing this - I know we all hope to see Derek's next show in NEO soon! Read more below to see the whole image... feel free to comment.
